50 Years Ago Today - March 1972: Heidelberg and Munich

50 Years ago today - after spending the night just outside Frankfurt, we headed towrads Munich, stopping for a few hours in the early afternoon in the delightful and sunny Heidelberg - I always wanted to go back there but never had, although I imagine it is much bigger nowadays with many chnages.

 Heidelberg - recent photo.

Along the road to Munich we picked up a hitch-hiker, American Jonnie, with cowboy hat and guitar.

Jonnie knew of a club where we could score so we found it and he went inside and came out with a lady dealer who sold us a small amount of good hash.

As we sat outside in the van with Keith at the wheel there was a flash, like the flash of a camera maybe, and quickly Keith was driving off down the road.

We ended up at the recently build Olymoic Stadium and walked up a hill for an excellent view. There we found a group of laughing Germans, drinking beer from bottles. Keith described them as "piss artists" - I had no idea what that meant.

Despite the wind I managed to stick some papers together and make a large joint which we shared with them. All was well and we laughed together.

We slept there that night, planning to cross Austria and enter what was then Yugoslvia the next day.

From what I remember we were mostly eating bread with cheeses and tomatoes, washed down with white wine. We had just a small one-burner gas camping stove which we reserved for our essential morning teas.

It was getting warmer now.
