50 years ago today - March 1972: Munich

50 years ago today, after sepnding the night in a car park close to the Munich Olympic stadium, with some of us sleeping in the van and some outside on the grass, we spent a lzy day in Germany before heading to the border with Austria to cross that country tomorrow.

American Jonnie kept us entertained with his guitar and travel tales. He was heading for India.

Our own plans would take us into Turkey but as we were unable to get the necessary documents to go any further that was to be our destination - at least that was our plan. Warmer weather meant we would slow down and see more sites.

My first trip outside the UK and I had mostly seen roads.

50 Years Ago Today - March 1972: Heidelberg and Munich

50 Years ago today - after spending the night just outside Frankfurt, we headed towrads Munich, stopping for a few hours in the early afternoon in the delightful and sunny Heidelberg - I always wanted to go back there but never had, although I imagine it is much bigger nowadays with many chnages.

 Heidelberg - recent photo.

Along the road to Munich we picked up a hitch-hiker, American Jonnie, with cowboy hat and guitar.

Jonnie knew of a club where we could score so we found it and he went inside and came out with a lady dealer who sold us a small amount of good hash.

As we sat outside in the van with Keith at the wheel there was a flash, like the flash of a camera maybe, and quickly Keith was driving off down the road.

We ended up at the recently build Olymoic Stadium and walked up a hill for an excellent view. There we found a group of laughing Germans, drinking beer from bottles. Keith described them as "piss artists" - I had no idea what that meant.

Despite the wind I managed to stick some papers together and make a large joint which we shared with them. All was well and we laughed together.

We slept there that night, planning to cross Austria and enter what was then Yugoslvia the next day.

From what I remember we were mostly eating bread with cheeses and tomatoes, washed down with white wine. We had just a small one-burner gas camping stove which we reserved for our essential morning teas.

It was getting warmer now.

50 years ago today we left Belgium and rapidly drove to Frankfurt

50 years ago today we left Belgium in our little van, five of us, John, Keith, Mike, Marion and myself. We entered Germany and arrived in Frankfurt. We stayed the night there, again sleeping in the van, and managed to score some good hash outside a club with an in-house dealer who came out to meet us. We are travelling quite fast, not stopping often during the day, so not seeing much. John and Keithy are taking turns driving. Keith seems the only one of us with any previous travel experiences.

50 years ago today, five of us jumped into our cheap little van and headed East

50 years ago today, five of us jumped into our cheap little van and set out across Europe heading for Turkey (two of us carried on to India). This was the first time I had left the UK. I was a 22-year-old chemistry graduate of the University of East Anglia, Noriwch. I had about seventy pounds, twenty pounds above the legal limit, some in travellers cheques and some in cash. We soon arrived in Brussels where we parked up on a street for the night and slept in the van. It was very cold.
