50 years ago today, we left Germany and crossed the border into Austria at Spielfeld.
We hardly stopped at all in Austria, soon entering what was then Yugolslvia, passing Zagreb and heading towards Belgrade (Beograd).
Our first night in Yugolsvia we spent the night and built a small but safe campfire in the woods.
As some of us slept around the embers, we
were awoken by the shouts of a man holding a rifle, pointing it at us
and making it obvious that if we did move, he would shoot us.
Now (in 2022) I have discovered a strange thing - although my passprt is stamped March 1 1972 Spielfeld and I remember we did cross Austria quick, the only stamp that I can find for Yugoslvia is 19 March 1972 at Sentilj, in the west - we did spend some time in Yugolslvia and the entry stamp for Greece shows 23 March. So that stamp showing 19 March must have been wrong and should have been 1st.
